ChatGPT with browsing, Perplexity, Claude with web access and Google's AI Overviews are answer engines. They read pages, decide which are trustworthy for the question asked, and compose a reply, usually with citations. The business that gets cited wins the visit or the recommendation; the rest are not shown at all.
Being cited depends on being readable by the engine's crawler, being clear about who you are, and saying something the engine can quote. A page written as an answer, with the number or the definition first, is far more likely to be lifted than one that warms up for three paragraphs.
